Change can be a wonderful thing
Change can be a wonderful thing.
In the midst of change, its not always possible to see the pathway ahead. I'll admit 2025 was a real test for me in my workplace. My Senior Executive was moving on, and the future of my role was unclear for many months. But I stayed the course, tried to see the small glimmers, and worked on a future career strategy that was right for me.
An EA wrote to me recently and said, "change is the only constant" and it reminded me of this period. Wherever we are in life, professionally or personally, change will always be there.
If we look at the EA role, we navigate continuous change. Our Senior Executives move on, and we begin working with someone new. We may change schools for growth or for other reasons, and of course the EA role itself is always evolving. Fast moving technological change, too, requires EAs to stay up to date and current with new tools and ways of working. Our colleagues change too as we move from school to school. Yet some connections stay with us. I've kept a few close friendships from my previous schools, and I treasure them.
If you are navigating change, I understand the discomfort and uncertainty that comes with it. However, try to take heart: amidst the noise and chaos, change can reinvent you, provide the growth for your next iteration, and be a wonderful and magical thing if you stay the course and look for the positives.
In his Meditations, Marcus Aurelius wrote: The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.
Now, I know this is easier said than done. I’ve been there, I get it; it is hard to stay on course. I've faced two turning points in my career, in two different schools: first in 2020, in the middle of the COVID pandemic, and again in 2025. At the time neither felt like a gift, but both turned out to be blessings and truly the catalyst for what came next.
My trajectory in 2026 was the right one, and yours just might be the right one too.
