EA Anonymous….Christmas Edition
This story is entirely fictional - a playful glimpse into the life of Krystal, a dedicated Executive Assistant in an Australian School. Inspired by the unsung heroes who keep schools running smoothly, Krystal and her world are products of imagination. Blending humour, heart, and a touch of chaos, this tale celebrates the resilience, wit, and warmth of EAs everywhere. Any resemblance to real people or events is purely coincidental. Step into Krystal’s office and enjoy her wonderfully messy, endearing world.
In our last instalment, our erstwhile EA was confronting the cancellation of Christmas due to budget cuts, risk management policy and a strange delivery of 12 Christmas trees. In our final chapter for 2024, the Boss finally shows a softer side and expresses gratitude to his amazing EA and yes we learn our EA's name.
As usual our EA is the last to leave. Although the big wig bean counters cancelled Christmas due to next year's budget restrictions, the colleagues took it into their own hands. Everyone brought a plate and a Tropicana theme saw Hawaiian shirts all round. Of course it rained and they all moved inside. Now all that was to be done was to empty the dishwasher.
As our EA opens the dishwasher, surprise surprise.... its empty. A post it note on the bench says 'thanks Krystal. I see you do this lots so I just wanted to share the load today. Merry Christmas - Kenneth from Accounts.'
'That's so nice,' Krystal said out loud to herself. Returning to her desk, a further surprise, a bottle of Moët and Chandon wrapped in a red ribbon and a card.
'How lovely.'
Krystal sat in her chair, recognising the handwriting of the Boss. He had been at the party but was in a mood and had departed early, pretending to take a phone call. A sure sign one of his children had rung him seeking money and he was not happy. The Boss wasn't really a Scrooge...
To my erstwhile EA,
Firstly, go home! You are the last here and that poses a risk and security threat.
As you know I'm not one for thanks or gifts or goodbyes but it would be seriously remiss of me not to acknowledge the incredible work that you ( and all EAs in Education) do to support, manage, guide, lead and humor whilst so graciously giving of your time, energy, intellect and experience to make this school a better place for one and all.
Our days are busy and stressful but that is as the work we do is meaningful, honourable, important and life changing. Sometimes we don't notice that until we do or forget about it until we are reminded of it. You are such an integral part of this mission and despite my moods, I couldn't think of anyone I would prefer to collaborate with on this journey of forging connection, growth and belonging. Thanks for your courage, dare, honesty and kindness.
What a year it's been! Merry Christmas to you and your family. Thank them for lending you to me.
Boss x
Krystal smiled. I love my job she thought.
She then looks over and sees Snuggles the cat, the family had just dropped her off, turns out they were allergic too...looks like Krystal now has a new pet. Merry Christmas!!
