World Philosophy Day
Thursday 20 November was World Philosophy Day - a reminder that ancient wisdom still shapes modern lives.
Over recent years, I’ve been increasingly drawn to Stoicism. If you haven’t read Ryan Holiday, today is the perfect day to begin. His work beautifully links ancient philosophy to modern leadership and life - and many of these ideas quietly guide the work of EAs in Education. Why? Because Stoicism isn’t just about personal resilience; it also teaches us how to build connection and belonging.
The Stoics believed we are social beings. Marcus Aurelius wrote, “We are made for cooperation, like feet, like hands, like eyelids.” Belonging isn’t a modern buzzword - it’s a timeless human truth.
Stoicism reminds us of our shared humanity, encourages less ego and more openness, and teaches emotional steadiness. Seneca noted, “We suffer more often in imagination than in reality.” Understanding our inner world helps us show up with calm, clarity and compassion. And as Epictetus said, “Difficulties show a person’s character.” Adversity creates growth - and shared challenge strengthens relationships.
So on World Philosophy Day, remember: Stoicism isn’t only about managing ourselves; it’s about showing up better for others. It helps us build communities where people feel valued, connected and able to grow. I’m so proud of EAs in Education for being that place where we CONNECT, GROW and BELONG.
